Applications Now Open for Barastoc Poultry Junior Scholarship Program!
At Barastoc, we put the chicken before the egg.
As part of this philosophy we established the Barastoc Poultry Junior Scholarship Program (BPJS) to encourage the next generation of enthusiasts to develop and share their poultry husbandry skills and knowledge.
“I have been breeding and showing now for four years and the support from my parents is amazing. During show season my mum and I spend many weekends away travelling to shows. With the help from the Barastoc Scholarship I was able to order a new roof and my Dad and I put it on. Now when it rains I don’t have to worry about the inside or the Pekins getting wet.”
“Mitchell Carrigan-Walsh grew up with chooks, but the Pomborneit local’s poultry passion took flight when he attended the Camperdown Ag Show at just seven or eight years old. That’s when Mitchell first
laid eyes the chicken breed Rhode Island Reds, and he was hooked.” The Barastoc Scholarship has helped him compete in poultry shows
in Victoria.
We are now searching for up to two Junior Scholarship Ambassadors living in Australia.

Evening. My name is Ricky. I am 15. I live in echunga in the Adelaide hills of South Australia. I have now been showing and breeding poultry for around 5 years. I have expanded my flock of poultry greatly over the years. I have just started my interest with waterfowl as well. I first started getting into showing when we moved off a broiler farm. I always wanted my own chooks as I enjoyed watching them grow and up and see what type of birds they become. I now have 7 different breeds of poultry. Numerous colours in most of these breeds. I have many different coops/cages to house my birds. They are very well looked after and are fed only the best feed. I plan to travel interstate when I am older and get to some shows in different states. I believe this will help me expand my knowledge of poultry and hopefully some day I can pass that on to my children. I believe BPJS will help me expand/improve my knowledge of poultry because it shows facts and headlines I am interested to expand on with poultry. I am currently in Year 10.

Hi their,
My name is Max Norris, I’m from the hills district syd. I have loved birds and poultry in particular.
I have a small flock of 20 chooks, including Pekin bantams, lakenvelders, Belgium D’Uclles and a few Isa browns. I have a deep passion for poultry. I represented my school Marian Catholic College Kenthurst at the Sydney Penrith show for poultry judging and I placed first. I work at a large pet shop in Sydney called Kellyville pets. I dream to be a geneticist as I love all things genetics. My backyard coop is my haven and it’s where I spend all my time. I wish to breed some really good show birds this spring as I would love to win a show. My nan first got me into chickens when she had a small coop just for eggs and they really interested me so she got some hens and I have never looked back! I breed many other kinds of birds too! I attend many poultry shows over Sydney.
