Autumn is a natural reset for your chooks. As daylight hours shorten, egg production will often slow down or stop altogether. At around the same time, they begin moulting—shedding old feathers, usually around the neck and tail—to make way for new growth. It’s all part of preparing their bodies for a period of rest before the next laying season.
You might also notice your hens becoming less keen to roam on wet and windy days. Don’t be surprised! Chickens prefer to stay warm and dry, often choosing to perch off the ground where cold, damp air settles. If your coop does not already have them, adding sturdy perches before winter sets in can make a real difference to their comfort.
To best prepare your birds for this seasonal shift start with good nutrition. Because feathers are made mostly of protein, the right diet does not support overall wellbeing, but ensures your birds have the energy and reserves they need to stay warm, protected and in good condition right through the colder months.
A high-quality, protein-rich feed such as Barastoc Champion Layer, Grains & Greens or Top Layer Mash helps provide the building blocks for strong feather regrowth.
