Modern Game – A Profile
Every chook parent has their favourites (even if we don’t tell them). It may be their weird and wonderful personalities, their colours or their size. For me, my favourites are my Modern Games… And this, is why.
So so big and so so small – Modern Games come in 2 sizes, Large and Bantams. The large are very hard to find, with only a few keen breeders working with them at the moment. My large males stand between 70-80cm tall when stretched and reached well above all of my other birds. The bantams however, are only around 25cm tall and have the finesse of a ballerina. They are perfectly suitable for small backyards or limited space.
I believe there are three main factors to consider when researching a Poultry breed to add to your yard.
TEMPERAMENT – Although they may look otherwise, modern games are some of the most quiet birds around. Due to the size of the bantams, they make wonderful little kid’s pets. Modern pullets are more than happy to be held and cuddled and are easily held by small hands. Even my large Moderns, are one of the quieter hard feather breeds, and take very little to calm down and settle into a routine.
LOOKS – Although not everyone’s cup of tea, I find the fine bone, graceful appearance of a modern very appealing. They come in a wide range of colours and patterns making it easy to distinguish them and tell them apart.
PERSONALITY – Moderns have personality galore. They are an active breed and will always be doing ‘activities’. They are inquisitive, friendly and always up for a chat. This makes them one of the best breeds for any backyard. I do find that they will try and fly, so a roof or trimmed wings is the go.
So what’s holding you back from adding to your flock? Life will not be complete until you find your next Modern Game friend.
