All Good Things Must Come to an End
So I am down to my final article as the NSW ambassador for Barastoc as 2019 comes to an end. This has been such a great experience for me and I will always be grateful for the opportunity.
As you may be aware participating in this came with some perks that included financial assistance and money for chicken food. So what did we do with the money? We were able to put a new roof over the breeding pens and then what was left went into building the new grower pens. The chicken food was definitely a HUGE help considering how expensive chicken food has become.
Like everyone else, the drought has been really tough here in Tamworth and our paddocks were just dirt. Over two years ago my pekins had been able to free range on grass and this really helped with keeping their legs yellow. This has been a bit of a concern and I was giving the pekins lucerne chaff (which is very expensive) as a replacement. Then thankfully it finally rained, and rained some more, then a few weeks later we had more rain. Our paddocks are now green and the pens all have green grass growing around them again so the pekins are now loving being out. When we picked some young ones for the Uralla show this month we were pretty excited to see some colour in their legs.
Finally I would really like to thank Barastoc for selecting me to be the NSW ambassador for poultry for 2019. I really encourage any young poultry fanciers out there to apply for this fantastic opportunity.
For the final time,
Nathan
