The Pekin Bantam
A Breed Profile by Nathan Quayle
Well it’s time for me to write my first article and I have been asked to write about the Pekin Bantam as this is what I breed and show.
I’m not sure what actually drew me in to wanting to breed Pekins, I think it was to do with just how uniquely different they are to other soft feather fowl. They are a breed that doesn’t come in both standard or Bantam like other breeds, they are known as true Bantams which means they only come in Bantam.
A unique feature of a Pekin is the amount of feathers that cover and hide their feet and legs and that the ideal Pekin will be round, almost like a soccer ball. The colours I breed are blue, black, splash, white and mottled, however they come in a wide variety of colours.
A Pekin would be a great choice for someone wanting backyard layers because they are easily trained and with daily interaction you will see just how much personality they have. Also, for young children wanting to get involved in poultry showing the Pekins would be ideal. Their size and passive nature makes them easy to handle and ideal for kids.
